MATCHES AND RESULTS > QUARTER FINALS     Tags:
quarterfinal #1 Guinea - Senegal 2:3(1:0)
A match of two relatively similar teams, and a local derby, though on Egyptian soil. A match of tough physical challenges, igniting tensions occasionally.
In the first half Guinea had a slight edge in midfield first.
But the first goal eventually resulted from unconcentrated build up by the Senegal defence who were twice stripped off the ball by consequently attacking Guinean forwards.
The first scene resulted in an offside goal but the second situation counted.
Already at the end of the first half the turnaround began.
Senegal increasingly were able to create chances though concentrated defending by the Guineans (except the keeper who spilled a number of balls again).
In difference to the group matches they were able to convert their superiority into goals, not at last thanks substitute Niang who scored twice.
Feinduno did have a chance to score the 2:2 but struck wide. His fine freekick (2:3) came too late.

MATCHES AND RESULTS > GROUP D     Tags:
Group D#2 Senegal - Zimbabwe 2:0(0:0)
The Sengalese game did not run smoothly yet but there was a class difference visible from the start. Zimbabwes attempt were quickly suffocated by the individually superior Senegalese and the Southern Africans were lucky that Senegal blew a handfull of chances in the first half. A goal by Camara was ruled offside, adding to it.
Before Camara and the young substitute Ba decided the match, ironically Zimbabwe had had a great opportunity to take the lead (Benjani).

Traditional West African football power. Still not at every Nations Cup. Best success: runners up.
Clubs: 2nd rank in Africa
Squad: professionals at Europe.
Coach: Senegalese.

It had been unrealistic to expect the Senegalese ´keep the level of 2002, but they are still a strong team. It will depend on their focus and determination how strong. At their best they will be a threat to anybody. Otherwise the strong group might hand them another disappointment. The outcome might be very close.
